It’s that time of year again! It’s time to go over the top up and coming additions to the Walt Disney parks and resorts in the new decade! This past year was one of Disney’s most ambitious years yet. It saw the addition of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at both US parks, a whole new skyliner transportation system, and so much more.
Some things were pushed back to later opening dates, and other projects are about to make their debut. What’s coming up in 2020? Check out my top picks below!

Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway
Hold up – are you having de ja vu? Nope! This attraction was meant to open last year, but the opening date was pushed back. This ride is now expected to open in 2020!
In 2017, Disney broke the hearts of many fans (myself included) when they announced the closure of the Great Movie Ride in Hollywood Studios. However, a fun, thrilling adventure is going to be taking its place! When you think about it, there really aren’t many rides centered around the mouse himself! Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway is going to change that on March 4th, 2020.
Taking up residence in the Chinese Theater replica at Hollywood Studios, this interactive attraction will transport audiences IN to a cartoon on a runaway train adventure starring Mickey and pals! In addition, this ride will be “2D and 1/2” according to Disney – a new type of technology that is 3D without the glasses. Will this ride live up to the reputation of the Great Movie Ride that it replaced? Be sure to check it out on your next trip!
Rise of the Resistance
While this ride has already opened at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Hollywood Studios, the opening date of this ride in Disneyland has been pushed back to 2020. Guests are already singing its praises after experiencing it in Florida. Like its Florida counterpart, expect this ride to draw HUGE crowds upon opening, and just like Smugglers Run, we do not anticipate there will be a Fastpass. Plan your trip accordingly so you can experience this wondrous new attraction in California on January 17th, 2020!
Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure
One thing that is sorely missing from EPCOT? Attractions featuring Disney characters. While Imagineers are going to change this in the coming years, one of the attractions opening THIS year is Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure. Featuring everyone’s favorite cooking rat, guests will board a rat shaped ride vehicle and be shrunk down to the size of a mouse, dodging open flames, falling knives and other dangers in the kitchen! Currently, this ride is a hit at Disneyland Paris and will open in Summer 2020 in EPCOT. The ride is part of the newest EPCOT overhaul and will live in the France pavilion of World Showcase!
Cirque Du Soleil
If you’re a fan of the avant garde acrobatic show Cirque Du Soleil, you’ll be pleased to know a new Cirque show is due to open in 2020! This show takes up the space of the previous Disney Springs exclusive Cirque show “La Nouba” which has been closed for a few years now. This new show is expected to feature new acts based around Disney animation!
For a fun night out away from the parks, be sure to check out this show. If you’ve never seen a Cirque du Soleil show I HIGHLY recommend them. They are amazing, I’ve seen three at various locations and I’ve been blown away each time!
Avengers Campus
In Disney’s California Adventure, the Avengers will find their new home at Avengers Campus. This area, which was formerly the area of the park dedicated to A Bug’s Life, is set to open in 2020 – however, there is not a whole lot of details surrounding that. We know that Spider-Man will have his own attraction, and you’ll be able to meet all sorts of Marvel characters. Other than that, however, full details have yet to be revealed. What parts will open first? Will the attraction open this year or will it be in segments like Galaxy’s Edge? Be sure to subscribe to my newsletter below to find out more info as it becomes available!
Planning a trip to Walt Disney World? Check out the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World. This Is hands down my FAVORITE guidebook. It not only highlights all the new things coming in 2020 but also provides ride reviews, dining option breakdowns and so much more!
